If planets are the actors and signs are their costumes, the houses are the stage sets where life's scenes take place. Each of the twelve houses governs a specific area of experience. Understanding them turns a confusing chart into a readable story.

The angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10)

These are the most powerful houses, called kendras in Vedic astrology.

  • 1st house – Self: body, appearance, personality, overall vitality and life direction.
  • 4th house – Home: mother, property, vehicles, emotional foundations and inner peace.
  • 7th house – Partnerships: marriage, business partners, contracts and open opponents.
  • 10th house – Career: profession, status, reputation and public achievements.

The succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11)

  • 2nd house – Resources: money, possessions, speech, food and family values.
  • 5th house – Creativity: children, romance, intelligence, education and past-life merit (purva punya).
  • 8th house – Transformation: longevity, shared finances, inheritance, secrets, research and the occult.
  • 11th house – Gains: income, friends, networks, elder siblings and fulfilment of desires.

The cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12)

  • 3rd house – Communication: siblings, courage, short travel, writing and skills.
  • 6th house – Service: health, daily work, debts, competition and overcoming obstacles.
  • 9th house – Fortune: father, higher learning, religion, long journeys and luck (bhagya).
  • 12th house – Release: expenses, foreign lands, sleep, solitude, spirituality and liberation (moksha).

Trikonas and dusthanas

Vedic astrology calls houses 1, 5 and 9 the trikonas (trines) — houses of fortune and dharma. Houses 6, 8 and 12 are dusthanas, associated with challenges, yet they can also give research ability, resilience and spiritual depth.

Empty houses are not "bad"

Everyone has empty houses — there are only nine or ten bodies to place in twelve houses. An empty house is interpreted through its ruling planet (the lord of the sign on its cusp) and where that planet sits.

How to interpret a planet in a house

Combine the planet's nature with the house's topic. Jupiter (expansion) in the 2nd house (wealth) can suggest growth through finances or teaching. Saturn (discipline) in the 5th house (creativity, children) can point to serious study, delayed but stable results with children, or creative work that matures with age. Mars in the 10th often shows a driven, competitive career.

House systems

Astrologers use different methods to divide the houses. Vedic astrology commonly uses Whole Sign houses; many Western astrologers use Placidus. Whole Sign is the simplest for beginners and a great place to start.

Once you know the houses, you can look at any chart and immediately see which areas of life are emphasised — the first big step toward confident chart reading.
