Rahu and Ketu are unique in astrology: they are not physical bodies but mathematical points. They are the lunar nodes — the two places where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path (the ecliptic). Eclipses occur only when the Sun and Moon are near these points, which is why ancient sky-watchers considered them so powerful.
The mythology
According to the Puranas, during the churning of the ocean the asura Svarbhanu disguised himself to drink the nectar of immortality. The Sun and Moon exposed him, and Lord Vishnu cut him in two with the Sudarshana chakra. Having tasted the nectar, both halves survived: the head became Rahu and the body became Ketu. Ever since, they "swallow" the Sun and Moon during eclipses.
Rahu: the head that hungers
Rahu represents desire, ambition, obsession, innovation, foreign things, technology, unconventional paths and illusion. Where Rahu sits in your chart, you often feel a strong pull — a hunger to experience and achieve. It can bring sudden rise and worldly success, but also confusion or restlessness if the desire becomes compulsive.
Ketu: the body that lets go
Ketu represents detachment, spirituality, past-life skills, intuition, research and liberation. Where Ketu sits, you may have natural talent but little interest, or a feeling that something is "missing" that cannot be filled by material means. Ketu is considered a significator of moksha.
The axis of growth
Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, so they work as an axis. In karmic interpretation, Ketu shows where you come from — familiar territory — while Rahu shows where you are meant to grow. For example, Ketu in the 4th house and Rahu in the 10th suggests moving from a focus on home and comfort toward public life and career.
Rahu and Ketu periods
In the Vimshottari dasha system, Rahu's period lasts 18 years and Ketu's lasts 7. These periods are often remembered as eventful: Rahu dasha can bring rapid change, travel and ambition, while Ketu dasha can bring endings, spiritual interest and simplification.
Nodal transits
The nodes move backward through the zodiac, spending about 18 months in each sign and completing a cycle in roughly 18.6 years. Ages around 18–19, 37, 56 and 74 mark nodal returns, often associated with turning points in direction.
Traditional remedies
For Rahu, people traditionally worship Goddess Durga, donate to the needy and avoid intoxicants and deception. For Ketu, worship of Lord Ganesha, meditation and caring for animals are suggested. Above all, clarity and honesty soften Rahu, and surrender and spiritual practice support Ketu.
