A practical guide to zodiac compatibility using elements, modalities and sign distances — and why the whole chart matters more than sun signs.

"Are we compatible?" is perhaps the most-searched astrology question. Sun-sign compatibility is a fun starting point, and the logic behind it is more structured than many people realise.

Rule 1: Same element

Signs of the same element (trines, 120° apart) share a natural rhythm: Aries–Leo–Sagittarius, Taurus–Virgo–Capricorn, Gemini–Libra–Aquarius, Cancer–Scorpio–Pisces. Understanding comes easily.

Rule 2: Compatible elements

Fire and air feed each other (Aries–Gemini, Leo–Libra), and earth and water nourish each other (Taurus–Cancer, Virgo–Scorpio). These sextile pairings are friendly and supportive.

Rule 3: Opposites attract

Opposite signs (Aries–Libra, Taurus–Scorpio, Gemini–Sagittarius, Cancer–Capricorn, Leo–Aquarius, Virgo–Pisces) share the same modality and complementary elements. They often feel strong attraction and balance each other's blind spots, though they must learn to compromise.

Rule 4: Squares create friction

Signs three apart (such as Aries–Cancer or Leo–Scorpio) share a modality but clash in element. These pairings bring chemistry and challenge — growth, if both are willing.

Why sun signs aren't enough
