Muhurta is the branch of Vedic astrology concerned with choosing an auspicious moment to begin an activity. The idea is simple: just as a birth chart describes a person, the chart of a beginning describes how an undertaking may unfold. Western astrology has a parallel tradition called electional astrology.

Common occasions for Muhurta

  • Weddings (Vivaha)
  • House-warming (Griha Pravesh) and foundation laying (Bhoomi Pujan)
  • Business launches and signing agreements
  • Buying a vehicle or property
  • Naming ceremonies, first rice-feeding, starting education (Vidyarambh)
  • Travel

Key factors astrologers check

  1. Panchang: favourable tithi, weekday, nakshatra, yoga and karana.
  2. Avoiding inauspicious periods: Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal and Bhadra.
  3. Lagna (rising sign) of the moment: strong, with benefics in kendras and a clean 8th house.
  4. Moon's strength: the Moon should be well placed and, ideally, waxing.
  5. Planetary conditions: for weddings, Jupiter and Venus should not be combust; many families avoid certain months such as during Chaturmas.
  6. Personal compatibility: the day's nakshatra should be favourable relative to the person's birth star (Tara Bala) and Moon sign (Chandra Bala).

Abhijit Muhurta

A window of about 48 minutes around local midday, considered auspicious for most activities and useful when time is short (traditionally avoided on Wednesdays).

Universally auspicious days

Some days are considered auspicious without detailed checks, such as Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami (Dussehra) and Gudi Padwa/Ugadi.

Practical perspective

A perfect muhurta is rare, so astrologers look for the best available option within practical limits. Good planning, preparation and intention remain the foundation of any successful beginning; a well-chosen time is a supportive addition, not a substitute.
