Many people are surprised to discover that their "sign" changes depending on which astrology they consult. A Western Leo may be a Cancer in Vedic astrology. This is not a mistake — the two traditions use different reference frames. Here are the main differences.

1. Tropical vs sidereal zodiac

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which begins Aries at the spring equinox. It is tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned to the actual fixed stars. Because of the slow wobble of Earth's axis (precession), the two zodiacs have drifted apart by roughly 24 degrees — the ayanamsa. That is why most placements shift back by about one sign in a Vedic chart.

2. Emphasis on Sun vs Moon

Western astrology popularly emphasises the Sun sign. Vedic astrology gives great weight to the Moon sign (Rashi) and the ascendant (Lagna), since the Moon governs the mind and daily experience.

3. Nakshatras

Jyotish divides the zodiac into 27 lunar mansions called nakshatras, each about 13°20'. Your birth nakshatra adds a finely detailed layer of personality, and it is central to compatibility matching and choosing auspicious times (muhurta).

4. Planets used

Classical Vedic astrology uses the seven visible planets plus Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes. Western astrology typically includes Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as well.

5. Timing techniques

Vedic astrology is famous for the Vimshottari dasha system, a 120-year cycle of planetary periods that describes which planet's themes dominate each phase of life. Western astrologers rely more on transits, progressions and solar returns.

6. Divisional charts

Jyotish uses divisional charts (vargas) such as the Navamsa (D9) for marriage and inner strength, and the Dashamsa (D10) for career. Western astrology mostly works with the single natal chart.

7. Chart shapes

Western charts are drawn as a circle. Vedic charts are drawn as squares, in either the North Indian diamond style or the South Indian grid style.

Which one is "right"?

Both are internally consistent systems with long histories. Western astrology is often used for psychological insight and personal growth, while Vedic astrology is traditionally used for prediction, timing and remedial guidance. Many enthusiasts study both and find they complement each other. The best approach is to learn one system well before mixing techniques.
